FAQ

FAQs About Psychoeducational Assessments

What is a Psychoeducational Assessment and Who Might Need One?

A psychoeducational assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that helps unravel an individual's unique cognitive strengths, learning styles, and potential areas for growth. It focuses on the individual's learning, which includes memory, cognitive abilities (including an IQ test), and academic skills, as well as screening for any attentional, behavioural, or socio-emotional concerns that are reported. Measures used include standardized testing, questionnaires for parents and teachers, review of report cards and additional reports if available, observations and interactions via in-person testing and video consultations as needed.

Whether you're a student aiming to understand your learning style, a parent interested in your child's cognitive abilities, or an adult seeking insights into your own potential, our psychoeducational assessments cater to individuals of all ages. A psychoeducational assessment in Toronto or a psychoeducational assessment in Mississauga at NEAC can help identify learning disabilities, attention difficulties, and cognitive strengths, providing clear recommendations for school, post-secondary, and workplace settings.

What is the Cost of Psychoeducational Assessments?

The cost of the assessment for students in Grades 1–12 is $4,000. The cost for students enrolled in Post-Secondary education is $3,500. Some extended health plans reimburse part of the fee under psychological services; we recommend confirming coverage with your provider before booking.

What Type of Insights Can I Expect from the Assessment Results?

The assessment results provide a comprehensive understanding of your cognitive and learning abilities and, where needed, mental health. It will also provide specific recommendations for academic support based on the results, both in the educational and personal environments. This information is meant to provide insights into making informed decisions about the individual's educational and/or professional journey.

Can a Psychoeducational Assessment Be Done for Adults?

Yes, psychoeducational assessment for adults is increasingly common and an important part of our services at NEAC. Adults may seek an assessment to better understand longstanding learning challenges, access post-secondary accommodations, obtain workplace accommodations documentation, or support applications for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC). A comprehensive adult learning assessment provides the same level of detail and rigor as assessments completed for children and teens.

How Long Does a Psychoeducational Assessment Take?

Most assessments at NEAC involve several steps: an intake (approximately 30–90 minutes), in-person testing sessions (typically 4–5 hours at our Toronto or Mississauga office), a scoring and interpretation phase, a detailed written report, and a final feedback meeting. Total turnaround time commonly ranges from a few weeks to over a month, depending on complexity and whether additional information, such as school records or rating scales, is required.

The Process

How Does the Assessment Process Work?

1
Interview & Testing

First appointment is in-person at either our Toronto or Mississauga office and involves the intake and testing portions of the assessment, typically for about 4–5 hours.

2
Consultation

After the testing is complete, if deemed necessary, a (video) consultation appointment will take place with the Registered Psychologist. The purpose of this appointment is to follow up on any information that came from the interview, testing, and/or questionnaires that may require further exploration. Following this, the results of the tests and consultation will be analyzed, and a report will be written.

3
Final Appointment & Report

The final appointment will also be with the Registered Psychologist to discuss the results and recommendations. This appointment will be held via video or phone. Following the appointment, arrangements will be made to provide you with your full written report.
