The Neurodevelopmental & Educational Assessment Centre offers a wide range of assessments. In processing these assessments, we wish to achieve the following:
• Define an individual’s strengths, weaknesses and learning style;
• Develop an individual management plan;
• Identify factors which may be complicating management.
Psychoeducational Assessments or Educational Assessments
The psychoeducational assessment determines a person’s cognitive and academic skills. This is the most sought-after assessment at our Centre, as it is required by the Ontario Ministry of Education and the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities in order to define a disability or other psychological conditions that are compromising a student’s academic progress. The psychoeducational assessment is comprised of a battery of tests, including the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-IV) and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test-III (WIAT-III). These tests assist with determining if students have a learning disability. Parental and teacher questionnaires are also a part of the assessment. These assessments help define individuals’ learning style and provide insight to those working with an individual about his or her learning disabilities. Psychoeducational assessments help determine the services required to enhance learning during school hours. They become an essential part of developing an Individualized Education Plan for students. Gathering the person’s history is an important and essential part of the assessment process.
Psychoeducational assessments also help diagnose the Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Individuals with ADHD may show persistent symptoms of inattention, impulsivity and overactivity and may benefit from proper treatment and management. ADHD may be further categorized into three sub-types: hyperactive type, inattentive type and combined type.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may be diagnosed through our assessments. ASD can be characterized by deficiencies in social interaction and communication and by the demonstration of restricted repetitive and stereotyped behaviour, interests and activities. Screening for this disorder is routinely part of a psychoeducational assessment.
This assessment includes the neurodevelopmental approach to learning developed at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA. It is a second level screening tool. These tests are administered in conjunction with a psychoeducational assessment only. Difficulties revealed may be a result of weaknesses in memory, attention, language processing, visual processing and fine/gross motor coordination. A developmental and health history are gathered from the parent or student of eligible age. Previous assessment results and therapies must be defined and considered. Serious physical health conditions and emotional/behavioural difficulties or traumatic events are also important elements considered when doing an assessment.
Through our psychological assessments, we wish to promote emotional well-being and meta-cognition. Psychological assessments help identify cognitive and emotional skills, as well as personality traits. By determining an individual’s strengths, we help achieve better learning and self-esteem.
Vocational assessments help individuals from high school age into adulthood requiring guidance for academic (post-secondary school/training) or employment (includes a cognitive assessment).
NEAC also offers Differential Aptitude Tests to identify candidates for hiring, training and careers, as well as the Interest Inventory to help clients find rich, fulfilling careers. Group tests for corporations can also be administered.
These assessments consist of an I.Q. test and academic tests to provide information for parents seeking consideration for “gifted” programming for their child.
Pre-school Developmental Assessments
These are available for toddlers (15 months) to children of approximately 6 years of age. Parents seek these types of assessment in order to access specialized treatment and therapy for their child (IBI and ABA, Speech and Language Therapy are some examples). The Bayley or the Stanford-Binet scales are used during these assessments. Extensive parental input is required.
Parent or students may have a pre-assessment consultation at no charge. A pre-determination form is available to be submitted to insurers.
Ontario Disability Support Program
In conjunction with our assessments, our staff conducts verifications of completed Disability/Impairment forms to enable an individual to apply for supports under the Ontario Disability Support Program Act. Forms are available from your local Ontario Disability Support Program (the provincial government is responsible for payment for completion of these forms only).
Ontario Disability Tax Benefit Program
At their discretion, the Psychologists in the Centre may complete these forms based on our assessments. The client is responsible for payment.
